Motorcycle Tours - Northern Greece - the route

Bike and Sun Tours 2008 - Northern Greece We ride down through Europe to Venice in three days and join a luxury cruise liner mid-afternoon for a 22hr crossing of the Adriatic to Igoumenitsa. There are bars, discos, restaurants, shops, swimming pool etc etc and everyone has their own cabin with private facilities.

We arrive in Igoumenitsa just after midday for our first easy day in Greece and in less than an hour on the road we will be in a roadside taverna for you to experience a genuine Greek welcome, a genuine Greek Country salad (horiatiki) and of course genuine RETSINA!! We then ‘roll’ on a few more miles to have four nights at a very attractive bustling little fishing port not far from Kerkira. There is much to see and do here or you can do nothing but lie on the immaculate beach with the other sunworshippers if you prefer.

Then we move on for a full day of mountain storming as we cross most of the country, from west to east, and end up at the incredible rock formations of the Meteora, with monasteries on top of some 24 of them. We are here for two nights because you will need at least a day to see anything of this region. And we have access to a beautiful new swimming pool here.

The next day gets us to a little market town in the heart of the Timfristos mountains, and we guarantee that you will be the only furriners there. The last part of the journey here will be an exciting intro’ to the next day in which we start off by completing the east/west traverse of the country in more breathtaking mountain scenery. You will see the landscape as it has been for the last 100 yrs,and perhaps even 3000 yrs in some places. We end this day at a small town/port on the north coast of the Corinth Gulf & we’re here for four nights again. There’s a castle, a bustling waterfront and a beautiful little harbour. This is another unspoilt, real Greek town with a lot of modern history associated with it. Did you ever hear of the Battle of Lepanto? There’s blue flag beach swimming and loads of very ethnic restaurants and typical Greek general stores.

From here it’s a short and absolutely delightful ride along the coast to Delphi site of the most famous ruins in Greece. Also you could take a trip on a most exciting rack and pinion railway. Here you can build up your reserves for the next sortie, this time into the mountains of the Peloponnisos. We cross the Gulf by the beautifully artistic new bridge (see centre spread) and very soon start climbing into a lot more stupendous stuff, well away from any taint of common tourism. And our stop at the end of the day is another place famous in Greek history and mythology - Olympia. We stay here three nights and you’ll be able to visit the atmospheric ruins, do more exploring or head for the coast a few miles away and play on the dunes and beaches for a day. From Olympia we return through the mountains to Patras and then home the way we came.
