On this trip your tour guide has again indulged his love of the mountains to give you (a mere) two weeks to explore just about the best known region of the European Alps. This is essentially the Italian section of the huge chain stretching from the Julian Alps in Slovenia, to the French Alps.

The whole chain is basically calcium carbonate, a greyish white material. But in the Dolomite region in particular the evening sunlight gives it a glorious reddish/orange appearance. Just look at the images of jagged, saw-toothed rock walls in any travel book.

Now in case you hadn't heard, there aren't many straights, or flats on the roads there, and the asphalt and the engineering of the bends enable you to set yourself up perfectly, either to test your tyres or just flow gracefully through them. Days and days of total biking pleasure.

For us on two wheels it's a mecca. you can't help but notice that every restaurant and hotel (even the swankiest ones) has a big sign up "Bikers Welcome". They know who their best customers are.
